As reported earlier this week, Apple has seeded a new build of Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard to developers.
The images show some of the features which have been added to the build.
Under a new Security tab in the Preferences panel, the Firewall now has the ability to limit certain applications and services.
A pop-up also notifies you of external machines that are attempting to access your Mac.
Spotlight now has better access to applications, featuring the ability to make calculations in Calculator and search for definitions in Dictionary.
In the new build Apple is allowing developers to access new UI elements, all the new UI is in HiDPI, which will allow the UI to increase in resolution without losing quality.
Apple has included a new utility with Disk Utility, File Recovery allows the recovery of deleted files. The utility allows files to be searched for and then recovered.

Can you do unit conversions in Spotlight? That is, if I type in “50 km in miles” will it convert?
(if not, it should…)

I wonder why the firewall access list says “iPhoto Rendezvous Sharing”? Rendezvous was renamed Bonjour quite some time ago.

Brilliant!
I’m glad to see Apple is attempting to secure the OS enough as to prevent widespread viruses from ever being a problem.
Also happy with the the newest features of spotlight.
Keep up the good work, guys/gals!

What I don’t like is the idea that the Firewall alert is a pop-up, can I control when they pop up or do I end up with a pop-up for every break in attempt towards my computer as soon as I open a port in the firewall?
I hate this since these pop-ups can be hidden by new pop-ups…. for ever and they can be hidden behind other windows…Just like in Windows!!! And I realy hate that.
Hopefully this will be integrated in some status bar that always is shown and only shows that my intervention is needed if i want to let someone in…

Nice. Blogged it.
My only wish from Leopard is more speed. Everything else is gravy.

At the moment I have a new macbook 17inch and a 20 inch cinema displayrunning at the same resolution, I wonder how leopard will affect the size of everything. Well at least the icons and UI.

The firewall in Leopard is not more secure than the one in Tiger, just more user-friendly. It doesn’t make the OS more secure by itself.
I wish the included outgoing connection firewall, though.
I’m bugged by Apple insisting fragmentation is not an issue in OSX (something I’ve defended in the past) and now mentioning that files better not be fragmented to be recovered. When I read the title of the screenshot I assumed it’d be using Time Machine but it’s obvious by the wording that no, they are recovering the actual file.
So, if they recommend files not to be heavily fragmented, will we then get an official statement from Apple (the current one advises against defragmenting) saying how to defragment? As a system option recommends defragmenting will we then get a defrag tool as well (or have it built-in?)

DID YOU SEE THE SCREENSHOT “Apple is making good headway with converting UI to HiDPI (Resolution Independent)”, LOOK AT THE TABS! THEY ARE THE SAME COLOR AS ITUNES.

How about doing something with labels? In my video folder I’d like the labels to have a different meaning than in my audio folder.

That screenshot for the resolution independent is a fake!
Look at the arrows!, if the rest is so crispy (and poor), why aren’t the arrows and the resize window bits so dodgy?

@TrasMuas
Simply because it’s better having an upscaled bitmap than nothing when you having vectorized the arrows and older parts yet…
Play around with other purely vectorized interfaces, you’ll see those kinds of limitations…
BTW, if someone wanted to fake it, he would have fake it completly also, without leaving missing parts behind…

As far as I know Apple never claimed that disk fragmentation wasn’t an issue, they just said that due to a bit of smart housekeeping it wasn’t a performance factor.
OS X automatically defragments files that are 20MB and over….In otherwords it keeps files used by Media Authors and Hardcore Photoshop users in contiguity, which is needed.
Disk fragmentation occurrs on any system, and recovering smaller files may be an issue.

TrasMaus,
relax.
Clearly, those resources are still bitmaps (as are so much of Mac UI elements, Apple or third-party). This is a time of transition for all concerned, and it’s going to take quite some time for everyone (including Apple) to accomodate resolution independence.
You can see this for yourself right now, in Tiger. Have a look in your Developer folder…

I thought they would get rid of the stripes, finally.
I would REALLY recommend to kill them.
I am still wondering if there wont be some more substantial visual developments, I dare to say, enhancements, like: get rid of brushed metal, for good (in Finder, in Safari, in Quicktime). Come on, brushed metal is so over; please not another major round for BM.
I would recommend to go all “new plastic” (like Mail, some iTunes (sans the blue of the latest store)), with a bit of pro-apps (sub-dued transparent bezels).
Thanks.

Alan: You missed my point entirely while at the same time referencing me to the same piece I talked about from Apple.
Apple dismisses defragmentation. Implies it’s done by the system and doesn’t show a way to know how fragmented a disk is. I can live with this.
But I think it’s a disrespect if Apple says somewhere the disk shouldn’t be heavily fragmented and doesn’t provide a way to knowing if it is.

Tom Benson: If you put anywhere in the system a notice telling the user to make sure the disk is not heavily fragmented if they want to recover something then you MUST provide a way to show the user the fragmentation level and a way to defragment it. Otherwise lose the note.
